Kalamar, Kalkan · 1 km to the beach
Villa Calikusu lives around its pool. The 14 by 4 metre infinity pool sits on a wide terrace in Kalamar, on the western side of Kalkan, looking out over Kalamar Bay and the islands offshore. A day here can start in the raised jacuzzi with a coffee, move to the daybeds in the pool’s shallow end once the sun is up, drift to a hammock after lunch and end at a table for 10 under the pergola. The villa sleeps 10 in five bedrooms, and every one of them has its own bathroom.
Inside, the house has more character than you might expect from the road. There are stone details, high ceilings and a palette of soft greens that echoes the hillside around it. The living room rises the full two storeys, with a mezzanine looking down into it and the sea beyond.
It suits families and groups of friends who want space to spread out. Children and infants are welcome.
The pool is 1.6 metres deep, with steps at one end. Its best feature is the generous shallow section, where raised planters and two daybeds sit just in the water, so you can lie in the sun and stay cool at the same time. Up on the terrace the jacuzzi is raised and hung with green drapes, and it faces the bay.
Around the pool there are sun loungers and parasols, cushioned seating and two hammocks. Across the lawn is a sunken U-shaped sofa around a table, a good spot for the whole party once the sun has gone round. Behind the pergola you’ll find a tiled outdoor shower and a table tennis table.
Outdoor meals happen at the side of the villa, where a wooden table for 10 stands in the shade of a pergola. Next to it is a portable barbecue, along with a sink and a worktop for preparing food, so whoever is cooking stays with everyone else. A cushioned sofa and coffee table beside the table give somewhere to sit once the plates are cleared.
You arrive on the lower ground floor, where there is covered parking. From there steps lead up past the pool and garden to a green front door with ornate glass panels on either side. In the hallway a staircase rises ahead with a built-in sofa tucked underneath, and a guest WC is on the right.
The hall opens into one large space for living, cooking and eating. The lounge comes first, under the double-height ceiling and tall windows, with the sea in view and sliding doors straight out to the pool. The kitchen beyond has a breakfast bar as well as a dining table for meals indoors, and another set of sliding doors leads out to the pergola. Upstairs the mezzanine has sofas and a table, a quiet corner with a view down over the lounge and out to the bay. A utility room on the first floor has a washing machine and an ironing board.
The bedrooms are spread across the house, which helps when two or three families share. The lower ground floor bedroom is a double with large windows onto the hillside and sliding doors to its own balcony, which has sea views and a jacuzzi of its own. It is reached by stairs from the sheltered dining area. On the ground floor, just off the hallway, a second double opens onto a private terrace with a round daybed, and from there you can step down into the garden and onto the pool terrace.
The other three are on the first floor, all with sea-view balconies. There is a double, and a twin with a tropical feature wall. The master suite at the end of the mezzanine is the one to argue over. Two of its walls are glass from floor to ceiling, taking in both the sea and the hillside, and a freestanding bath sits in the bedroom itself. It also has a walk-in wardrobe and a hanging swing chair, plus its own en suite shower room and balcony.
Kalamar is on the bay of the same name, west of Kalkan town. From Villa Calikusu the nearest shop is 750 metres away, and the sea and the closest restaurants are about 1 km off. Kalkan centre is 2 km away, with the old town’s lanes of shops and restaurants winding down to the harbour. With covered parking at the villa it’s easy to keep a hire car and head along the coast, to Patara’s long sandy beach in one direction or to Kaş in the other.
